Encountering Vietnam

The Travel Study Program "Encountering Vietnam" takes advantage of a unique location in Hue, Vietnam from July 26 - August 28, 2010.

The program is intended to introduce students to Vietnamese culture, language and history as an encounter reflected in travel writing. Students will study Vietnam's tumultuous past and its diverse cultures through reading past travel narratives produced over the centuries and they will each participate in producing their own, contemporary travel narrative. "Encountering Vietnam" is designed as a travel study that complements on-campus courses students may have already taken in Vietnamese history or language.

2009 Travel Study students in VietnamWhile "Encountering Vietnam" is an intensive summer program, it is also intensely fun! Lectures and all scheduled course activities happen from Monday to Thursday. On the weekends, we take two trips after week one and week three to the Hoi An Area and Hanoi respectively. There are also city tours worked into the Mon-Thurs schedule, a day trip to the former de-militarized zone (DMZ) in week four, and periodic evening events. Students also reside within the citadel, just a short walk away from the old imperial palace and many World Heritage sites. Spend five weeks exploring modern Vietnam's history and centuries-old culture at Hue University while enjoying the unparalleled hospitality of Central Vietnam in this scenic former imperial capital. Hue, located just 5 km from white sand beaches and on the Perfume River, is an idyllic university town renowned for its scenic tree-shaded avenues filled with bicycles, its tranquil temples, and its market streets lined with delicious food stands. Students will be attending class at Hue University, College of Foreign Languages.
